Prayer Around The Cross

Please join Pastor Felice on Monday, October 2, from 6:30 to 7PM for her special Prayer Around The Cross worship event. This will be a short, quiet, and prayerful moment to pause and reflect upon the cross as we prepare for the commemoration of the Reformation and the upcoming new Church Year.

Please consider giving to Lutheran Disaster Relief to send aid to victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Checks may be made payable to Good Shepherd with Lutheran Disaster Relief in the memo line, and you may either specify the event to which you are donating or elect to allow Lutheran Disaster Relief to send the donation to where it is needed most. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to all who have been affected so drastically during this historic hurricane season.

Dear Members of the Body of Christ in the Florida-Bahamas Synod,

As we continue to watch the track of Hurricane Irma, we are being surrounded by prayers and support from throughout the ELCA. The synod office has received numerous calls and messages from synod staff, pastors, and bishops throughout the church who are holding us and our companion churches in prayer in these days. Many congregations are ready to respond and support those affected by Hurricane Irma however they can.

Specifically, the Southeast Synod will be providing us a list of congregations in the areas around Atlanta, GA, Birmingham, AL and Nashville, TN who are willing to host those who may need to evacuate. That list will be shared on the home page of the Florida-Bahamas synod web site and on our Facebook page as it becomes available. We give thanks for our community in Christ who are surrounding us with prayer and support.

Assistant to the Bishop Michele Hilton has been on conference calls with the Florida VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters) all state, federal, inter-faith and non-profit agencies are as deployed and prepared as they can be. She has also been in good communication with Lutheran Disaster Response in Chicago. They are ready to support us however we need it, and we are already coordinating a joint prayer service between the chapel in the Synod House and the chapel in the ELCA Churchwide office in Chicago for the days ahead. We will share information about that as it becomes available.

It looks like Hurricane Irma will most directly impact Florida on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The Synod House will be CLOSED on Monday.

Synod staff will remain available throughout the weekend.

Michele Hilton can be contacted directly at 941.373.5596.

As per our disaster response plan, pastors will be sharing specific information about the impact of the storm in their area with Conference Deans, who will then share that information with the synod staff. Conference Deans will be actively connecting with pastors throughout the weekend.

A donation link has been set up on the home page of the synod web site. Donations made to the synod-wide disaster response fund are used 100% for needs caused by disasters. This is also the fund through which we can support our companion churches who may be impacted. Designated donations to "Hurricane Irma disaster response" can be mailed to the synod office (3838 W. Cypress St, Tampa, FL 33607). More information about donations is available on the

Please stay attentive to information from local agencies regarding conditions and plans for your area.

Many congregations are cancelling worship and other events this weekend. Pay close attention to information coming from your congregational leadership. A Liturgy in the Time of Storm service has been created for those who may want to gather with family and friends during this storm.

As the body of Christ, we stand together in times of joy and in times of struggle. This weekend, know that you are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses who are praying for and supporting you. As Saint Paul writes, "Keep alert, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love." (1 Corinthians 16:13-14)

Welcome, Pastor Felice!

Good Shepherd is proud to welcome our wonderful Interim Minister, the Rev. Felice Johnson, who will be watching over our flock during the call process to find our next permanent pastor.

Our Farewell Pot Luck with the Pastor

Good Shepherd held a bittersweet Pot Luck Luncheon as we bade a fond farewell to our beloved Pastor Ken Blyth as he moved on to a new and exciting chapter in his journey of serving our Lord and Savior.

Thanks to all who joined us for a warm time of food and fellowship over a Pot Luck Luncheon. That was followed by a program of fun and frolic kicked off with a special performance from our occasional Praise Band, The Flock.

We were blessed to have a time to reminisce and say a few words to Pastor Ken. Of course, this is not "Goodbye," just "Until we meet again."

Sunday, October 29th is Reformation Sunday-- and the 500th Anniversary of Luther's historic posting of his 95 Theses on the door at Wittenberg. Plan to be Wearing Something Red!
Please watch this space for updates on Good Shepherd's observations of this Commemoration of the Reformation... the family reunion 500 years in the making!

We are happy to report that Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, renowned for the warmth and cameraderie of our after-church Fellowship Hours, will now continue to have Fellowship Hours on Sundays. Although we have fallen on times of too few volunteers to work the counters and the kitchen, the Hospitality Committee' efficient Plan to utilize only paper cups and plates and serve only cookies seems to be working well.  (If you would like to have a cake for a special event, please plan to bring plasticware to serve with it.)  As ever, the harvest are many and the workers are few, so if you feel you are hearing the call to volunteer to help out, please do.  Contact the church office to be directed to the proper folks.  We always need your assistance and would be glad to have it!

Important: Changes to the Good Shepherd Media Center CD Ministry

Thank you for your patience.  We have recently become a subscriber to and now may include musical selections, so we are presenting the Sunday services in their entirety, rather than separate pieces for Word and Sermon and Announcements. Shut-ins will receive copies of the CD as before. We will ask other congregants to order a CD recording only if they were sick/confined to home on the Sunday in question (homebound.)
